SHUT… THE… DOOR!
I am so tired of finding flies on my sandwich if I leave it unattended for more than five seconds. I’m sick of the flies that have taken on characteristics of buzzards, as they loom over my head, waiting for me to take my eyes of of the food so they can swoop down and contaminate it. I am fighting a losing battle to keep these varmints out of my house. My kids are the reason that they keep gaining unlimited access to the haven that is our kitchen. Every time a kid goes in or out of the back door, there is a line of nasty little buggers, waiting to descend upon my food. It’s like an exclusive fly nightclub, except it isn’t exclusive. Any fly who wants a free meal is allowed to get in line and almost certain to gain entrance.
In addition to the fly problem, we are letting out all of the cool air that our energy efficient home works so hard to retain. I finally refused to turn on the air conditioner, just to cool all of the high desert. We are now sweating it out in an 82 degree house, all because my kids refuse to remember to shut the door. Yes, I suppose I could make them do the “open and close the door twenty times” activity, but then I would be doing that all day long. That activity works fine for a family with one or two kids, but seven? Not gonna happen. I seriously need to come up with a way for my kids to get the message that the door needs to stay closed at all times. Marye, I could really use your help, here!

LOL! We don;t use air conditioning because a drafty,100 year old , 4300 sq ft house in Texas costs over 500.00 a month to a/c.
However, try planting pots of basil around your doors…flys HATE it.
I say, install a big doggy door and REALLY give the neighbors something to talk about!
I hate, hate, hate flies! Last year it got so bad that I made my (then 7 yr old) oldest son pay a quarter every extra time he opened the door (given one freebie to go out and one freebie to come in each day). He loves money, and hated taking a hit in the piggy bank, and learned very quickly. Good luck!
my dad had us all make signs about energy rules. and had us post them at all “energy exits”. He also plotted us (me his actual child and neighborhood kids) against each other. The younger kids were the energy police, they loved “writing” citations, and older kids took pride in being the example, a little bit of bribery goes a long way.
