Sick child daycare idea

The place where I used to work had a daycare for sick kids.

It was a drop-in place that cared for kids with mild illnesses so parents could go to work. It was staffed by nurses, was a nice place and there were rules and criteria for using it.

I know that the sick child care was a lifesaver for some working parents, but we never used it, I’m not sure why. We were fortunate enough (and still are) that one or the other of us could take off a day when one of the kids was sick.

However, there were times when neither of us could miss work and the kids still got sick and needed care, but we weren’t wild about using the sick child care benefit.

To cover the times when neither of us could stay home, we enlisted the help of the retired parents of some friends. This couple moved to town to be near their son (our friend) and his family so they didn’t know too many people at first, and the couple happened to live near us.

We approached them one day about the possibility of keeping our kids on short notice if they woke up with an ear infection, mild fever, etc. and we needed to go to work.

The couple was thrilled with the company of our kids and the extra income and our kids loved going to their house and being spoiled and it worked great for everyone.

  1. Wow, that is a great idea. I need to cultivate that myself. I will say, even with four [as of this coming Saturday, when I get married!!] parents to choose from when the kids get sick, I still have the most flexible schedule. BY FAR. I could get snarky about this, so I’ll just stop there. :)

But there are always times when you just HAVE to be at work. So I need to find a friend for those situations.
