Sick With a BIG Side of Energy

I think I have reported on the fact, that I have found the solution for combating fatigue.  In case I haven’t told you lately…my solution is twice monthly trips to see my acupuncturist – where I get special energy treatments.  They work excellent.  A little painful, but its soooo worth it.

The downside to this is that I still get every bug and virus out there.  So while I am feeling really energized and anxious to go out and have some fun in the snow – I know that I should just put my pajamas on, and hang out in front of the television, because tonight I am sick with a cold/flu.

I really wish I could have some cake, and eat it too!

Ya-Ya I know….you feel real sorry for me.

I hope you’re feeling better soon! Perhaps you should see if your accupuncturist has any treatments that can help strengthen the immune system too?

    Hi Laura-
I love your blog! I tried acupuncture for about 6 weeks (once a week) and it didn’t seem to help at all. How many visits did you have before you started feeling more energy? Any other suggestions that you feel have really helped you?
About your immune system – the one thing I think helped me was taking the following supplements every day: astragalus, nettle leaves and elderberry. You probably hear lots of advice about supplements, but this is the only thing I have tried that I believe may help avoid colds, etc. If you start to feel sick you should take these 2-3 times per day. Feel better!!

P.S. I work too – don’t let people tell you that you don’t have CFS(or a mild case of it-very annoying) just because you can manage to hold a job.

    Hey Laura, get well soon.
I used to go to the acupuncturist every week when I first got ill, and though it did help me to a certain extent energy-wise, I found that over time I became hypersensitive to the needle pain, and would end up suffering panic attacks before appointments on occasion. Unlike you, for some odd reason, I have had no bugs or viruses at all for the two years since my original bout of Glandular Fever that started my CFS off. I suppose this is indicative of how each of us experiences this thing completely differently from the next, and that what is incredibly helpful for one person may have no effect on another.
However I totally get your cake and eat it frustration. I was foolish enough to think I could cope with a day trip to London to see an exhibition (and a boy) on Saturday. I was so tired on Sunday that I wanted to die. I had to hide in my room because every time I tried to talk, I just cried. Pitiful. I knew a girl from finland who every time she was sick, would cream together butter and sugar to eat, because it reminded her of her mum’s baking when she was little. I hope you feel ok and have something to make you feel nice like this.

    Thanks Ellie,

It’s kind of funny, the strengthening of the immune system was the reason I started going to see my acupuncturist in the first place. Energy was the least of my problems. And while, my immune system isnt completely repaired….it is a lot better.

I still get everything that goes around….but it doesn’t totally knock me out. That said, I kind of had an icky year – with mono, pneumonia, and meningitis….but stil, its the end of the year and I am still around to tell you how sick I have been ;)

Regardless, its very beneficial to me.

    Hi Julie,

I felt an immediate response from the accupuncture. Afterwards, I would be very tired and slept for hours and hours, and that has lasted up until just recently. I am in my third year of treatment. We just started focusing on energy treatments in October…and the energy I get from them greatly surpasses the energy I ever had, when I was healthy.

It sounds a little suspicious, I know….but its true. It doesn’t last. Usually I get about 2 or 3 days of super high energy in a 2 week period, and then it tapers off – but even at the end of the 2 weeks, its still pretty decent.

I do take supplements as well, and am just starting taking echinacea every day. I think that might be part of the reason I felt flu-ish…its long past though.

As for the work thing….I really think that working is necessary and a really important part of the CFS recovery. It doesn’t have to be full time – or even paid….its just important to have something to work towards.

It might be important to note that my acupuncturist practices japanese style acupuncture. That might make a big difference. Thinner needles, and way less points are focused on.

Thanks for the comment….I love it when people love my blogs :)

    Hey Abi,

you are totally right of course. All of our experiences with CFS are different. Of course our choices of treatment will be different.

For me acupuncture works wonders….when I first got sick, the only thing that I responded to, was antibiotics. Nothing else, which is the reason why my immune system is so f**ked up!

While I am sorry you are feeling so horrid (I hope its passed now…its been a while since I have posted any comments) I am glad to hear that you got out to spend some time with a boy :)

Boys are also important in recovery. We all need to learn to pace yourself. The advice doesn’t help when we just want to run all over the city…but we either have to make the choice to do that, and live with our choice…or do something a little more sensible….which isn’t nearly as fun.

If it is any consolation whatsoever. I would have done the exact same thing that you did. And would be suffering a whole lot the next day. Even after living through that scene many many times, it will always be the choice that I pick.

The butter and sugar thing sounds interesting….I once had a roommate from Austria, who cured everything with Jaegermeister. I think it might be time to start that regime, again.
