Siesta time good for the heart!
Good news for us early birds who grit their teeth to get through the afternoon because our evolutionary bio-rhythms are at their lowest ebb.
Research by Liverpool’s John Moores University has shown that the mere thought of an afternoon siesta can help reduce the risk of a heart attack. The length of the nap is irrelevant as it is in the minutes just before we drop off when the beneficial changes to our body take place.
At this point blood pressure drops taking the strain off the heart.
Next time I think about an afternoon siesta, I’ll know it’s in my genes and it’s doing me good …!

It’s good to know that even a simple sleep in the afternoon can help us aside from the usual benefit it offers us.
Just thinking about a nap is beneficial? How about just thinking of going to work?
Yea sleep definitely affects your health. I heard that chronic under-sleeping is responsible for more than just undermining productivity and making people more irritable. It also increases the risk of accidents and could contribute to serious, long-term chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
I think I will be taking that nap now.
is the length of the siesta important or just any siesta is good?
Hi Mihai
The length of the siesta appears not to be important, so any siesta is important. I know myself that sometimes mid afternoon I doze off off for a fraction of a second and then wake up unbelievably refreshed .. but that doesn’t happen too often, sadly!
