SIGG Bottles Made Before Aug 2008 Have BPA

Last year, people just couldn’t get enough of SIGG. They were looking for an alternative to plastic bottles containing BPA which can leach.

While rumors floated that SIGG did contain BPA, SIGG defended the bottles by saying that tests showed no leaching of BPA. What they didn’t say is that the SIGG bottles contained trace amounts of BPA.

If BPA is present, but not leaching, is it still harmful? Apparently SIGG thinks so since they’ve developed new BPA-free bottles. Currently, there’s no offer of replacements or refunds for SIGG bottles made before August 2008. I have one (pictured), so does my husband. I’m shopping for a new water bottle this weekend.

How do you feel about older SIGG bottles containing trace amounts of BPA? If you want to learn more and read quotes from SIGG, visit Light Green Stairs where I reviewed my own SIGG bottle last year. Also, read SIGG’s recent letter about their liners.

What? Are you kidding me? After spending far too much on 2 kids bottles a couple years ago, specifically to avoid the whole plastic BPA issue, finding out that there is still BPA present is disturbing. My kids use their bottles almost every day. Are we being paranoid, since Sigg claims there is no leaching? Perhaps, but since there are alternatives out there, I’m not taking the chance with my kids. Very disappointed to hear this (but thanks so much for passing along the info!). I’m choked – those bottles were not cheap! I also gave one to a friend’s daughter as a gift (oh wait, and 2 more to our nieces) so that makes it worse for me…

  2. Nina, I feel the same way. The two bottles I purchased were very expensive. I’ll be surprised if SIGG doesn’t end up offering replacements. You can contact them here: http://mysigg.com/bulletin/contact.html

Thanks for the link, Peggy… I just may follow up with this. Maybe if they get enough complaints they will consider offering replacements. There are sure to be other disgruntled customers when word of this gets around…

      • Nina, if you email them, they will send you a form and shipping label. They want you to send back the bottles as proof of purchase. Then, they issue a credit on sigg.com. It seems like a waste to have so many people shipping back their bottles though. I had hoped they’d accept receipts.

Thanks so much for the info, Peggy. I wonder if it’s a full credit to buy a new bottle or just a partial? Also, being in Canada, this might not work anyway… but I’ll give it a shot!

    Hi Peggy,
My sister-in-law just told me that Whole Foods (Vancouver BC Canada) will accept old Siggs for a replacement, no receipt required! So for those of you who want a new one, check with your local Whole Foods. Yay!
