Sightseeing on the Atlantic City Boardwalk

Though I’m a big fan of Vegas, I also love Atlantic City for fun in the sun and gambling action. Atlantic City, New Jersey, combines the best of Las Vegas and Miami with its high-rise hotels, lavish casinos, beautiful beaches and endless supply of places to shop.

The city thrives on tourism (only 35,770 people actually live in Atlantic City) and the Atlantic City Boardwalk is its focal point. The Boardwalk was originally built in 1870 as a buffer between the beach and the fancy hotels. The length of the Boardwalk was shortened (from seven miles to about four miles) to protect from hurricanes — though it still remains the longest boardwalk in the entire world.

Hanging out on the boardwalk is a great way to spend the day in Atlantic City. Start with a great meal and drink at one of the boardwalk’s many beach bars and restaurants. Some of the local favorites include the the Sand Box at Caesars, the Beach Bar at Trump Plaza, Hard Rock Café, the All Star Café and the exciting Planet Hollywood. Then make your way to one of the Atlantic City Boardwalk’s many museums and historical centers.

Check out the Atlantic City Art Center and the Atlantic City Historical Museum (both located on Garden Pier) for a fascinating look at Atlantic City’s rich history in America. The Atlantic City Boardwalk is also home to the New Jersey Korean War Memorial and a Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum. Other historical sites include the Sandtennial, the Million Dollar Pier, and Chicken Bone Beach.

Art lovers will enjoy visiting the Boardwalk Living Theater. This theater’s fine actors recreate the sights and sounds of the Ol’Atlantic City through their various plays and concerts. Visitors should also check out Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City Boardwalk’s convention center. This historical venue is home to major concerts and events.
