Smoking Increases Risk Of Diabetes

cigggss.jpgOk, so I have to admit that when I first started reading about this little tidbit of research I repeated aloud over and over and over again, “are you kidding?” My husband actually asked me “how many times are you going to say that?” My response… “seriously, are they kidding on this one?”

Smoking is now being linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. It was a no brainer for me when I started to think it out. Smoking equals increased heart disease equals increased risk for diabetes. But was I right on?

“Conversely, there are also possible non-causal explanations for this association. Smoking is often associated with other unhealthy behaviors that favor weight gain and/or diabetes, such as lack of physical activity, poor fruit and vegetable intake, and high alcohol intake,” the researchers write.

Hmm… right on indeed, at least with my train of thought. What do you think about this research? Coincidence? Dependent consequences or independent findings that should be taken seriously? Why oh why do I ask so many questions? Just the nature of the beast I suppose…

Your theory sounds about the only one that makes sense to me! :) I’m a non smoker, and I live in a non smoking household, but is it just me, or are smokers treated in this nation like they carry the plague or something? Obviously it’s an unhealthy habit and can lead to all sorts of health complications, but it seems to me that the media just loves portraying them as like… Evil.

Either way, this is an interesting study, as I never would have thought smoking and diabetes could be linked!
