New research suggests that smoking is a far greater health risk for women than it is for men. In a study conducted by U.S. and European researchers, female patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) under 60 who had smoked fewer cigarettes actually had “more severe disease and greater lung function impairment when compared to their male counterparts.”

That means even when women smoke fewer cigarettes, they have the potential to get sicker than men who smoke even more.
