So, is that cell phone safe or does it cause cancer?

It’s safe. No it’s not. Yes it is. No it’s not. Could it be that our health and safety – and all the research that is being done – are reduced to schoolyard-like exchanges like “is to!” and “is not!!”? That’s what it seems like sometimes.

First, we read of research that says cell phone use cause brain cancer and not just any brain cancer, but a rare form of it. Then we read that it doesn’t cause the cancer because other researchers had different findings. But wait, yet more researchers say it does cause cancer. And what’s the latest? Apparently, we don’t know.

A study called Interphone, began 8 years ago and it involves approximately 50 researchers who are following study subjects from 13 countries. The researchers are looking for information on 4 different cancers that affect the head and neck area. These cancers are glioma, meningioma, acoustic neurinoma, and tumors in the salivary glands. As of now, there still isn’t a definite answer as to whether cell phones cause cancer. Those involved in the study are divided pretty well into 3 equal groups: researchers who believe there is a definite link between cell phone use and cancer, those who feel there is no connection at all, and those who aren’t sure yet.

The researchers have noticed a light increase in cancer for people who have used cell phones for 10 years, but the experts are not sure if this is a true finding or if the research itself is flawed. In fact, they’ve been debating this now for the past 18 months.

So, what does that mean for us, the every day person who likes to use their cell phone but doesn’t want to increase their risk of cancer? Perhaps, until the jury is out, we shouldn’t panic, but we should be prudent. I’m still using my cell phone as I need it, but I use my landline phone whenever that’s an option. To tell you the truth, it’s more comfortable for me to use the landline so it’s not that big a deal.
