Spaghetti and meatless balls

While the rest of the family was chomping down on spaghetti and meat balls one night this week, I was giving Quorn meatless meatballs a try. I’ve always been a fan of other Quorn products, so I had high hopes for these, too.

They didn’t disappoint. The balls’ texture and flavor went well with the spaghetti and tomato sauce I ate them with. The flavor is relatively mild, so I’d recommend serving them with some sort of flavorful sauce.

Quorn products are generally vegetarian (but not vegan) and soy-free, so they are great if you’re looking for an alternative to soy-based fake meat products. Their main ingredient is mycoprotein, a high-protein fungus which contains all 9 essential amino acids. It is way yummier than this description makes it sound. :)

Ah Jul – meatballs used to be my favourite meal – in my pre-vegetarian days. Now if only I could buy quorn here in Australia I’d be sorted . . .

Some Quorn products are good, others are not really worth it. I think that it is a matter of personal taste and trial and error. If you are very careful about what goes on your plate, check the labels before you buy.

On a separate note, how do you handle meals with family when meat is consumed at the diner table? I’m curious.

    This sounds soooo good!

I love Spaghetti…and Meatballs are always a plus.

Just out of curiosity….Do you know where I can purchase good quality foods online? I am now trying to order from online stores only because of various reasons…….can you help me with any suggestions??????

These are the places I have tried:
    delivery.com
celebrityfoods (best out of the 4)
    dinewise.com
    seamlessweb.com

It’s too bad Quorn hasn’t made its way to Australia yet! I don’t think it’s in Germany, either, so I’ll be learning to live without it soon enough. :)

Celine – I’m the only vegetarian in my family, so I’m used to family gatherings involving meat. Everyone is conscious not to add meat products to side dishes, and generally my wish to avoid meat in the food I consume is completely respected. Sure, I’d prefer there not be any meat on the table, but I can respect the fact that their diets are different than mine.

Leo – I don’t usually order food online, but if I do come across any good sites for it, I’ll be sure to blog about it!

Ah Jul, we are people of the same spaghetti soul. I love spaghetti and meatballs, but I find Quorn to be a bit weird, and not always very good (I think I had a bad experience with Quorn nuggets a few years ago and never returned).

I’ve been experimenting with making my own meatballs… I found the following recipes to be fairly helpful… making adjustments here and there, particularly, veganizing them by replacing the eggs with ground flax seed blended with water:

    Tofu Meatball Recipe on Recipezaar
TVP Burgers on Mediterrasian.com – the recipe works just as well for “meat”balls as it does for burgers…

    Thanks for the post. Enjoy!

Thanks for the recipe suggestions, Monica. I tried making my own veggie meat balls years ago from a recipe in the Vegetarian Times cookbook, and it was awful. Those recipes sound promising, though!
