Spend an Afternoon Working on a Puzzle

Today the kids and I spent the entire day, well the first part they did have to clean their rooms, working on putting together a puzzle. It was a lot of fun and yes I do realize how boring that may sound but it really is. You work together as a team to get a finished product.

Doing the puzzle with them instantly took me back to my own childhood when my sister and I would gather to the table with mom and we’d do it all day with a soda in one hand and a puzzle piece in the other. There wasn’t much talking just searching for where that puzzle piece went and who would find the next piece.

Today, the kids learned to separate the pieces from straight edge to the other because it was easier to put it together. They said from now on they will always put them in two piles like mom does. Did you ever work on a puzzle as a child? What about doing one as a family or just one parent? How did it make you feel?

My kids have already asked me to purchase more puzzles so we can do this more often, so looks like one stop this weekend will be to get some more puzzles. I mean we only have 2 weeks before school starts for one, 3 weeks for another, etc. I think this will be something to remember. When was the last time you pulled a puzzle out and worked on it with your kids?

I love working on puzzles with my kids. We do have to maintain our vigilance, though, since our dog likes to steal pieces.

I have fond childhood memories of jigsaw puzzles and have now begun to share that with my kids. My children are only 4 and 2, so they’re not ready for an entire day of puzzle assembly, but they’re pretty good with 100 piece puzzles. Although I remember there being a lot of silence in puzzle assembly growing up, it was good to just be…and share time together. “Making memories.” A friend of mine said that her mother would always say “we’re making memories” in response to the “why are we _________ ?” questions from the kids. Indeed.

hehe, besides the two girls accidentally knocking pieces off the table, I also have a 2-year-old that likes to HIDE the pieces.
