Staying Calm During a New Flu Outbreak

I have to admit that the H1N1 (swine flu) outbreak is creeping into my thoughts more than I’d like.

Just today, there’s a probable case of the virus mere miles from me. Does that make me nervous? Yes, but there’s no need for panic. Of course, not being in control of something and lacking the safety net of a vaccine can make anyone stressed, but it’s not so bleak.

I’ve found almost nothing online about dealing with the mental stress of this outbreak. So, I’ve had to pick my own brain to come up with some healthy tips for staying calm. If you have more to add, please make suggestions in comments.

Reminders and Suggestions on Staying Calm During a New Flu Outbreak

• Keep in mind that the US and other countries have stockpiles of effective medicines that help fight this flu if taken during first days of sickness. Part of this prep work was started in 2005 in anticipation of the bird flu. In addition, work on a new vaccine has already begun.

• If touching items in public places makes you nervous, carry anti-bacterial hand gel to clean up as soon as possible.

• Practice relaxation techniques, yoga or other exercises to relieve stress.

• Put things in perspective. Even though this virus is new, thousands of people have already died of regular old seasonal flu this year.

• Wear a surgical mask if you are sick, but don’t expect one to keep you well. It’s a likely fake sense of security, and can create alarm in others around you.

• Remember we’re all in this together. No one wants to make you sick. (No one nice anyway.)

• Practice common healthy habits to avoid getting sick or spreading sickness. Relax knowing you’re doing what you can.
