Stem Cells Used to Create Hair

This is interesting. Kursad Turkmen, a Turkish scientist working at the University of Ottawa has succeeded in “reproducing skin with hair” as part of his “research on skin using stem cells.” I put all that in quotes, because the article is rather vague. I’m not exactly sure what was accomplished. Did he create skin, including hair, from stem cells? Or did he create hair on preexisting skin using stem cells as a sort of catalyst? Either way it’s interesting.

Now for my requisite cynical comment. In the form of a prediction: There will be a stem-cell based treatment for hair loss available before there is one for a life-threatening disease.
