Strawberry cardamom smoothie

smoothieI don’t make enough blender drinks these days. Back when we lived in the US, we kept a stash of frozen berries in the freezer, and popped them into the blender with other ingredients to make up delicious frozen drinks of all kinds. In our current apartment, however, our freezer is too tiny for berries to hang out there, and with that our habit of regular blender drinks has faded into memory.

This morning I was staring at some need-to-be-used-right-now strawberries in the fridge, and decided it was time to break out the blender again. I put in a handful of strawberries, about a cup of rice milk, a splash of maple syrup, an ice cube, and a generous pinch of ground cardamom and blended away. The result was so delicious that I think I’m going to have to start using the blender more often this summer.

What’s your favorite drink to make in the blender?

Anything with alcohol and berries (health reasons — doctor’s orders), but I usually go with the strawberry smoothie or the blueberry smoothie (and adding a little cognac never hurts — although this is probably an unforgiveable use of cognac for most people). I also like to make raw soup in a blender (not really a smoothie, but pretty close).

I’ll have to try the cognac thing! I think we have some somewhere.

I do love cold soups in the blender – various versions of gazpacho are some of my favorite summer dishes.

Definitely Gazpacho for the summer. It brings back memories from Andalucia.

As for fruity blends, my fave is a simple banana and strawberries. Great taste and energy boost.
