TEDDY – which stands for “The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young” is a massive program aimed at finding the environmental factors that cause type 1 diabetes. The study will screen 220,800 babies across four states and three countries. What is probably different about this program is the huge role played by the families of the children participating in the program. The families have been asked to record as much information as possible including every single medication the child receives. The study will also collect information on the drinking water used by the kids and samples of blood, nail clippings and stool. This is going to be one massive exercise giving enormous amount of data for the researchers.
