Summer eating

While I was over browsing through the Busy Family Meal Planning blog, I realized one of my favorite things about summer. Truth be told, I’m not a fan of soaring temperatures especially since my area also gets very brain-meltingly humid. However, I love fresh foods in the summer. I get such incredible joy out of going to our local farmer’s market and picking out fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. Granted, we have one that’s open in the Winter too but for some reason the greenhouse produce just can’t match what was grown in the sun.

I love blueberries and can eat them until I explode and I think I passed that gene on to my kids because we’ve been known to wipe out a few baskets of them in less than one day. I love making strawberry shortcakes and seeing how delighted my kids are with such a simple dessert.

My oldest has been learning about the environment in school lately (frankly, she’s been learning about it since she was a toddler as I explained about littering and caring for trees and whatnot). I’m thinking that taking her to the market and explaining to her how it’s better to support locally grown farm foods rather than importing food could be a good educational moment – there’s nothing better than having your kids learn something informally just because the information is there!

What’s your family’s favorite summer time food?

There you go! You’re singing my song: buy local and in season whenever possible. Thanks :-)

I like anything I can eat fresh from the garden, or cook on the grill during the summer. Cooking in the kitchen just seems wrong.
