Super small ways to green your outings

It’s sometimes easier to go green at home than when you’re out and about. At home you have more say in what goes on. Once you’re out in the world, businesses and other places dictate how things go, including how green your experience is. That said, while not all businesses care about green, you do have some choice in the matter.

green your outing

Try these small and easy ideas to save resources when you’re on an outing…

Never leave home without your reusable shopping bags. If you have a habit of leaving them at home, buy a bunch and leave some in your car. Just don’t forget, when you bring bags with purchases into your home, put new empty bags into the car.

When out for ice cream, get an edible cone vs. a throw away cup and spoon.

Carry reusable coffee mugs and water bottles in your car. You can even carry an extra reusable cup for when you stop for soda or another fountain drink.

Frequent green restaurants over eco-baddie eateries.

Ditch the drinking straw at all restaurants – I know this seems small, but consider if every straw you ever saw used was stacked up in a pile. That is one huge heap of plastic waste!

For carrying your kids (or your own) snacks around the town use eco-smart reusable storgae containers or reusable snack baggies over plastic bags, plastic wrap, and foil.

If your doggy goes on outing with you, use a more sustainable poop scooper.

Walk when you can – or bike, or scooter, or skate, or take public transportation. You don’t always need the car.

What great tips! Thanks for these. Sometimes I think it’s hard to get in the habit of living green, but all it takes is a few reminders, and suddenly you won’t even be thinking about the little things anymore, you’ll just do them.
Here is a great website that allows people to talk about their experiences with green groups and environmental organizations- like an everyday “Yelp” for these groups. http://www.greatnonprofits.org/green
