Supernanny Book Review #1

Love that library! Just got ahold of Supernanny : How to Get the Best from Your Children, and I thought I’d do a fairly in depth review. I’ll start with an overview, and then go chapter by chapter.

My first impression: Far more prose than I expected. It’s a very colorful book, full of pictures. What I expected was a lot of lists: Involvement Technique in 3-steps; 5 ways to establish a routine, etc. While there are a fair number of bulleted lists, there majority of the book is standard prose.

Right up front, Jo explains that this book is aimed at parents of preschoolers. In the first section she covers a few points of development beginning with the newborn and stopping at age five. This makes me wonder if there will be a sequel to assist parents with school aged children.

After a brief introduction, the book consists of two parts. The first quarter covers the broad points:

• Ages and stages
• Routines and rules
• Setting boundaries

The remainder of the book is devoted to Troubleshooting. Jo covers most of the same topics she is addresses on the TV show:

• Dressing
• Toilet training
• Eating
• Social skills
• Bedtime
• Quality time

At the end is a list of “Useful contacts,” two pages of websites with brief descriptions, and a two page index.
