A luxury golf resort and spa is trying something different to get new travelers hooked on their place. The more amenities you give up, the cheaper the price August 16 – 31, 2009, at Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego.

The price starts at $219 a night for deluxe accommodations and breakfast for two. For each thing you’re willing to live without, the price gets lower. Forget breakfast and you pay $199. Without an honor bar, the price drops to $179. Skip the air conditioning, and you get it for $159. (Ouch, that one is going to depend on the weather.)
Can you live without pillows? Then the price drops to $139. You see where this is going…
If you stay in a tent in your hotel room with no toiletries, linens, lights or air conditioning, you can get a deal: $19 a night!
In a recent BBC article about the Survivor Package, the General Manager of the Rancho Bernardo Inn, John Gates, is reported as saying the deal is a way to help people stay at the resort who couldn’t normally afford it. He also says it’s a way to reach out to new customers.
I have mixed feelings about this Survivor Package. On one hand, it’s helping people and the inn in tough economic times. However, it does seem silly (mean?) to have the staff remove a bed from a room and leave a tent. Yet, I’m still tempted to sleep in a tent inside a nice resort in San Diego for only $19 a night. Aren’t you?
Are you going to be a Survivor in San Diego this August?
