Historically, autumn has been known as harvest time, the time of the year when matured grain or ripened fruit and vegetables are reaped and gathered in. In Autumn, farmers are grateful, celebratory even, if they’ve been blessed with bounty. And they should be; they’ve worked hard and they are deserving.

Yes, harvest is the time when all of their hard work pays off, tenfold.

But every farmer knows that next year might bring less fortunate times. They know they aren’t guaranteed a healthy crop.

So they chose for a brief time to live in the moment and be thankful for what they have and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Harvest is all about life … and living … and being grateful for what God has blessed you with in this life even though you may have faced hardship the previous year and might face hardship again.

It’s about seizing the day — celebrating the day and what you have in the present.

Does any of that resonate with you, as a survivor? Yeah, I thought it might … I’m all about celebrating the day. The bounty I have been blessed with. The harvest.

So, how can you, as a survivor, celebrate this year’s harvest? I have a few ideas:

  • Go apple-picking: Eat an apple as soon as its picked. Listen to the sound of the stem breaking off the branch. Breathe in the fresh air of an orchard around you and smell the fermenting apples that lie on the ground around you, knowing that there is no waste; out of the dropped apples, cider is made.

  • Select a perfect pumpkin: Feel the ridges on the rind, the roughness of the stem. Carve it and feel the slippery slimy seeds on the inside. Roast some seeds with more salt than you feel comfortable with and indulge on a seasonal treat from the earth. And place a candle in the pumpkin to light your way in the darkness, knowing that no matter how dark life gets, there’s always a way to illuminate your path.

  • Visit a corn maze: Get lost in the plants that grow taller than you! Feel the adrenalin when you momentarily lose your way. Relish in the confidence that you will get out, sooner or later, even if others have to help you find your way.

Happy Harvest!
