taking the leap - dealing with fear and creativity

I’ve been hearing an awful lot of “I have no creativity” or “I can’t do that” or even “I’m no good at making stuff”. It’s come up in comments on this blog, in conversations with friends and even in the craft classes I teach. What happened that people are so afraid to experiment and play? Did they have a teacher or a parent who said they couldn’t make things? What happened to the exuberance of childhood?

I think it’s time for people to let go of their old beliefs that they can’t be creative!

Think about it – is that helping you at all? How does it make you feel to be so scared to try something new? Is it a positive feeling? Or are you just staying stuck because you don’t know how to move forward and begin creating?

Everyone is capable of creating and being creative!

There are some fantastic resources out there for rediscovering your creativity. Go spend some time at your local library or bookstore and read books about igniting your creativity. Make a conscious effort to not listen to the voice in your head that says “you can’t”.

You can!

Do you remember what you loved to create when you were a small child? Did you play in the sand? Paint with your fingers & hands? Sing? Draw?

Spend some time doing those same things again – with no judgments or limits on what you’re doing. Just let it flow and relax. Turn off your inner critic, don’t try and be an adult – just enjoy yourself. You’re not trying to create a masterpiece – in fact, the end result doesn’t matter! All that matters is the creating and the fun.

Making a decision to break through the old beliefs that you’re not creative can be incredibly healing. You’ve given yourself permission to explore and find joy in making things again!

I have gone through some serious periods of fallow creative thoughts. It has to be the worst feeling I’ve ever know. Your words are such great inspiration to people.
