There are a lot of myths about tanning, namely that it is bad for you. One expert says that tanning in moderation isn’t bad for you. But excessive tanning (either outside or in a booth) is. To look at your risk of skin cancer, you have to look at your overall amount of tanning across your lifetime.

“Skin cells produce more pigment when they are exposed to UVA or UVB light from the sun.” The extra pigment is what gives you a tan. But if you burn before you tan, take note. Use sunscreen to minimize the damaging affects of the sun. Too much time in the rays will not only up your skin cancer risk but will also give you wrinkles.
