Teach Your Dog to Stop Barking

With the weather cooling down for autumn, many people in my neighborhood are starting to open their windows and keep them open longer throughout the day and at night. Aside from the dust (inevitable!) there is one other nuisance you don’t notice as much when the weather is so hot that windows stay shut 24/7: Barking dogs.
In my neighborhood especially, where houses are mere yards away from each other and separated only by a six-foot-tall concrete block fence, barking dogs are not only annoying, but they easily disrupt sleep or other relaxing activities like watching television or reading.
In the video above, Enrico, an expert trainer, handler and certified vet tech, explains how to handle your dog if they’re the disruptor!
He says the first step is to identify what the dog is barking at and make sure it’s not something they’re supposed to bark at (intruder or other problem). If they’re barking at something that they shouldn’t be, he says to tell the dog to stop. Once it stops, give it a treat.
His suggested tools include a pinch collar (which gives me the heebie-jeebies, but I can appreciate Enrico’s particular method), a bark collar (which offers an instant correction), or a regular flat collar.
As always, consistency is key!
I wish he had tips on how to handle other peoples’ barking dogs, but that probably just comes down to walking over and talking to them about it!
