Tests can be painful – how to help someone who is going through them

Post 4 of my Valentine’s Day countdown.
When someone you love has a chronic illness or chronic pain, often they have to undergo medical tests that can be less than pleasant. While some people prefer to do these things on their own, many appreciate having someone around for support. And, the more knowledgeable you are, the more supportive you can be.
Much stress and anxiety is caused from not knowing what the test is and why it is being done. This is something the prescribing physician should explain, but if not, ask. Ask what exactly is done for the test and what they are looking for. Being prepared is half the battle of overcoming fear and anxiety.
Important questions include – but are not limited to –
- How long does it take to do the test?
- How will this test change things in terms of treatment?
- What do I have to do to prepare for the test?
- What can I expect for after the test?
- How long will it take to get the results?
- Can anything I do affect the results?
- What is the step after the tests and the results?
If you are accompanying your loved one to the test and you know that he or she is stressed, try to come up with ways to relax before the day and practice them. You can try relaxation techniques that include breathing rhythmically, tensing and releasing individual muscle groups (if that’s allowed during the test), imagery, or listening to music, or anything that is comfortable and permitted.
If there is a lot of anxiety, try talking beforehand to the people who will be doing the test. They may know best what to do as they probably see this time and time again.
Do you have any suggestions for people who are in this position? We’d love to read them.
