The Old Post Office, just blocks form the White House in Washington, DC was almost demolished in the 1960s, but luckily some local people organized to save this popular tourist stop. As the third tallest building in the District, it boasts one of the best views of Washington, DC from it’s 10th floor, 315 foot clock tower.
The building was the first government building to generate it own electric power using a power plant in the building to power electric lights.
Built in 1899, it as considered obsolete by 1915. By 1934, it became just another government storage building. In 1964 it was declared “blighted” and plans were developed to tear it down.
Today, it houses private commercial and government offices and a very popular food court, frequented by tourists.
