The Brew Review: Wild Blue Blueberry Lager

Wild blue 1 It’s October and you know what that means? Beer swilling Octoberfests all over! So in celebration of Octoberfest, I will be presenting some tasty brew and not so tasty brew reviews throughout the month.

First Up is Wild Blue, Blueberry Lager. Sounds strange already right? Wild Blue is made by Blue Dawg Brewery out of Badlwinsville, NY and is made with natural blueberry flavor. You can also see a bit of blueberry sediment in the bottom of the bottle after pouring.

Wild blue2 As you can see from this picture, it has a very dark bluish/ maroon color to it. Not a thick head at all on this lager. Wild Blue contains a stout 8% Alcohol/volume to it. You can tell when you taste it. What you can’t taste is any sign of lager. It’s blueberry all the way and almost tastes like a whine cooler. Wild Blue runs about $6.99 a six pack and is not really worth it if you can’t stomach the other five.

After I drank the first Wild Blue I got a splitting headache and a stuff nose as if I had an allergic reaction to it. My stomach felt slightly ill and I began to have a bit of an acidic feeling in my gut. I would not recommend Wild Blue to my worst enemy.

Wild Blue 3

Stay tunes later this week for brew that I DO like…

And yes, that’s a coke mug. The only beer mug I own is a liter mug (Great for Keggers!) from Germany and I wasn’t about to pour 3 beers in it to get the effect.

I’m going to have to disagree with Scott. I loved Wild Blue. I thought it was the perfect combination between the taste of a wine cooler and a beer. This is coming from a person who normally doesn’t like beer. But my husband also liked it and he loves beer. (his beer of choice is Blue Moon or Kokane). And for the record, I had no headache, stuffy nose, acidic stomach, or allergic reaction of any kind.

I like Blue Moon as well, but Wild Blue was just way to sweet for me. I’m not saying you shouldn’t try it. I’m just saying that I wouldn’t recommend it. If you love extremely strong flavored wine coolers and you don’t like beer, drink up.

On a side note I should have mentioned in my review that the stuffy nose, headache and ill stomach were not necessarily caused by Wild Blue, but I was feeling pretty good up until I drank it and I’ve never had any problems like this with a beer before. Occasionally I’ll get a slightly stuffy nose if the beer is really hoppy like a Sam Adams, but never a feeling like I did with Wild Blue. Not for me.

What I would recommend if it wasn’t for the fact that it’s almost like drinking N/A beer is the Michelob Lime, Tangerine and Pomegranate Ultras. They taste very pleasant but very weak.
