The California wine country ranges from Mendocino County in the north, to Santa Barbara County in the south. This highly fertile region produces 90% of all of the American wine produced today. Over 100 different grape varieties are successfully grown in the many California appellations.

Today, there are over 1,200 wineries across the state, creating everything from expensive, limited-production boutique wines and champagnes, to mass market jug wines form companies like Gallo and Inglenook.

The first grapes came to the region from cutting off of Mexican vines, and were planted by the 18th century Spanish missionaries.
