Completed in 80 AD, the Colosseum is one of the most recognizable structures in the world.
Between the time it was build and the 6th century, it was used for battle reenactments, animal hunts of species collected from across the Roman Empire, as well as other public spectacles and events including public executions and the slaughter of Christians. But mostly, it hosted gladiatorial contests.
Some contests or events lasted several months and employed thousands of gladiators.
The stadium sat 50,000 spectators, including special boxes for dignitaries. _______________________________________________

Nice photograph, Mary Jo. I soooo want to go to Italy.
Jon, if you get any photographs of Venice or Portofino–I love looking at the boats on waterways with the colorful balconies in the background–I’d love to see them posted here.
Thanks for the photo fun.
Jackie
Nowadays you can get cotton candy and meat on a stick there. It’s pretty awesome.
I still recall the gladiator, offering to pose for photos with tourists outside who refuesed to put down his Evian water for pictures. Not all that authentic…
