The different definitions in “pain clinic”

January 7, 2009 by Marijke Durning, RN

Have you ever wondered what defines a pain clinic? What separates the different types of pain clinics?

The International Association of the Study of Pain has a task force that was formed to find "desirable characteristics for pain treatment facilities." What this means is that they’ve put forth guidelines that they feel best describe the clinics and are in the best interests of the patients the clinics serve.

The document defines the terms pain treatment facility, multidisciplinary pain center, multidisciplinary pain clinic, pain clinic, and modality-oriented clinic. They then list all the desirable characteristics of each, such as what types of professionals should be available in each clinic category.

To read about the guidelines and the role of the task force, I encourage you to go to the IASP website and see what it’s all about: Desirable Characteristics for Pain Treatment Facilities
