When it was completed in 1937, the 6-lane Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world.

It’s also a popular spot for Bay area suicides, as over 1,200 people have jumped from the bridge to the water 220 feet (67 m) below. Sadly, less than 30 have survived. The California Highway Patrol even has a special radio code (“10-31”) to designate a bridge jumper. 

Tolls for autos and motorcycles are $5.00 cash and are collected only on vehicles traveling southbound into San Francisco from Marin County. Pedestrian and bicycles crossing are free.
