The Icky Side of Pet Care

There’s really no other way to say it: some aspects of pet care are just plain old icky.

We noticed a couple of days ago that Turbo was licking himself a lot. If he wasn’t sleeping or walking around, chances are you’d find him with one hind leg up in the air, “going to town” on his backside, as we say.

We noticed yesterday that said backside was looking red and irritated and then this morning it looked well, not good (I’m trying not to be too icky).

I made an appointment with the vet, thinking it was a kitty hemorrhoid, but oh no, that would have been too convenient. Basically, our cat is one of the rare felines that our vet has seen with impacted and infected anal glands. While pretty common in dogs, she said it’s not usually an issue with cats, though it’s not unheard of.

I’ll leave it to your imagination what the immediate treatment entailed, but the poor kitty had to have an internal antibiotic inserted and is on an oral antibiotic for the next week as well.

I can tell you he’s very unhappy with me right now.

  1. Oh, no! I can relate to the unhappy cat at the vet. Mine’s there now getting an x-ray to check for kidney stones.
