Hooray! I think that this is just fabulous. The National Athletic Trainers Association has issued an official 7 element plan for aiding athletes with type 1 diabetes maintain their healthy bloodsugars and do what they do best… play ball!
Being a former Division 1 athlete in college I can understand why this was needed. The daily routines and extensive traveling could pose a risk. And better safe than sorry. When you are practicing 4 hours a day including the weight room and burning over 2000 calories a day, there needs to be guidelines.
“Exercise training and competition can cause major disturbances when it comes to blood-glucose management,” says certified athletic trainer Carolyn C. Jimenez, PhD, ATC, lead author of NATA’s position statement. “Special considerations for blood-glucose control, medication, travel and recovery from injury are required for all athletes with type 1 diabetes.”
This will also help bring awareness to teammates and training personnel, including coaches and nutritionists that work with the athletes.
