The Nintendo DS Lite is Sporting a Pink Ribbon

It’s a Friday evening and each of my three kids is chillin’ out with a Nintendo DS Lite. But not the one I wish they were using.

See that beauty above? Seems $5 off the $129.99 purchase price of a limited edition Pink Ribbon DS Lite will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure; Nintendo is promising a minimum donation of $100,000.

I was jazzed when I saw that … you know how I feel about these pink ribbons. But then I learned that Nintendo pissed off someone in the gadget blogging business with this particular pink ribbon product. Check out this rant on Gizmodo:

Meanwhile, the company that is making $1.6 million per employee is slapping a ribbon on a device, tossing spare change in the face a cause and probably netting more money because of it. $5 doesn’t even come close to Nintendo’s profits per DS. This isn’t a donation. This is exploitation. Nintendo, you can do better.

What do you think … is Nintendo being cheap or do you think a minimum donation of $100,000 is something to applaud?

(Regardless of how you feel about Nintendo, you can buy one of these online at amazon.com.)

(Kudos to Engadget for bringing this product to my attention. And thanks to my husband for pointing out the Gizmodo post.)

I think there should be a patent on that ribbon. A dear friend of mine who is now battling BC (breast cancer) informed me that the particular ribbon Nintendo is using, is actually the “running ribbon” that is used by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure cancer movement.

You’re friend is right neoCarla — as I mentioned, Nintendo is donating to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. I believe that entitles them to use that particular ribbon.

Thats really great. Even if for the sake of publicity, the company is doing it for a good cause. Could you brief me about this cancer movement?

Anna John, I’m not sure what you mean by this ‘cancer movement’ — but I’d be happy to brief you once I understand your request.

If you mean all the pink ribbon campaigns that are out there in the world right now … you might want to revisit my post on The History of the Pink Ribbon:
