The One in One Out Rule – Tame Those Toys Thursday

I’ve mentioned this tip before, but with Christmas in just a few days, I felt it was appropriate to bring it up again.
A great way to keep toy clutter under control is to have the one toy in, one toy out rule. This means that every time your child gets a new toy, he/she has to decide on one to get rid of and donate to someone else. Not only does this cut down on the toy clutter, but it teaches your kids to let go of things and give to those who are less fortunate than they are.
Every year before Christmas, we go through the toys and get rid of ones that the kids don’t play with anymore for whatever reason. We have also boxed up toys that we knew our youngest one would eventually want to play with but wasn’t quite ready for yet.
Decluttering the toys before Christmas leaves room in your house for the new ones they will be getting. It’s also a great way to start off the New Year!

I just made this rule for my clothes. It’s working quite well. Now if only I could get the old stuff over to the Salvation Army.
Happy holidays.
