The People Have Spoken: No Perfume
Well, there it is, readers and drinkers.
33% of you wish that fellow tasters would lay off perfume and cologne. (Here, here. I found this especially distracting while teaching my component analysis seminar, which is all about the senses. A gal wearing patchouli even drowned out the ground coffee beans and the liquid smoke.)
20% of you think people should be tasting and not trying to get a buzz on. (Get thee to a bar!)
15% of you wish you had the nerve to shove aside those folks camped out at the bar, oblivious to new arrivals. All right, I took liberties with that one. But it would be nice if they would move.
Although the other answers weren’t chosen as much, those behaviors are still apt to ruin others’ winetasting experiences: wild children, bragging about your cellar, and so forth. Most people go to wineries to learn about the wines and choose which ones to take home. They would most likely prefer the excursion to be fun yet relaxing. I know I do.
Thanks for participating.

Perfume is a definitely no-no for wine tasting. Especially when someone has worn a certain brand for a long time and they can no longer smell it on themselves (thereby putting on entirely too much).
But then what do you do – especially at a wine tasting? Do you tell them to back off the scent next time? Or just try and ignore it?
Cherie,
I don’t think there’s much we can do other than spread the news passive-aggressively, like this.
And I often hold my breath as I pour for folks with too much scent.
