The Raw Food Diet and Fertility

This month’s issue of Domino (March 2008) has some fabulous raw food recipes that I am dying to try. But before I attempt to mix up some blueprint pudding or chocolate mousse made with only unprocessed and uncooked plant foods, I wondered what effect, if any, a raw food diet would have on my womb. All ingredients seems healthy, and the less you cook something the more nutrients it retains, right? Is there any reason why raw food would mix poorly with a set of blooming embryos?

I did find a testimonial which swears by the raw food diet as fertility aid.

Marie at Green Fertility discusses her foray into raw food but doesn’t really say how she feels about it in connection with fertility.

But Author Susan Weed discusses the phenomenon of raw food and concludes that:

The cook dances with the element fire. The cook stirs the cauldron. The cook transforms the parts and turns them into our whole. Blessings on the cook. Praise to the cook. May your food be well cooked.

Here’s a great site with tons of links to introduce you to the raw food diet so you can decide for yourself. But in the meantime, tell me, does blueprint pudding (a mush of bananas, figs and avocado) sound tasty or not?

  2. My acupuncturist told me NO raw food while TTC. It is too difficult for the body to digest. Don’t know if it’s true or not, but the cycle I got pg w/ my twins, I cut out all salads.

    And Pretty (which is my new nickname for you ;-) ), you know, I feel I heard that same advice from my acupuncturist, but I am having a hard time with it. I just can’t do a meat-filled meal each day and gosh, I guess steamed broccoli and other cooked veg would give me the folic acid I need but have I mentioned I’m not crazy about cooked veg? Much prefer raw concoctions. And what about fruits?

    Some fruits are fine, depending on your issues. Ask your acupuncturist for a list of foods. Some people (like me) have problems with “heat” so raw, cooling foods are ideal. It really depends on your TCM diagnosis.

    Notice the raw foodie gal live in N. Carolina. I challenge her to eat only cold, raw foods in a place with a real winter, especially if she spends any real time outdoors! No way. Cooking was huge step in human evolution, and many plants are very hard to digest without it. Some (tomatoes, broccoli) increase their nutritional value when cooked.

    Blueprint pudding – I’m with you with the nanners and figs, but not sure how I feel about the avacado in there – although I find them kinda bland so maybe it would just add some more texture and healthy fat? I definitely have my raw (broccoli & spinach) foods that I prefer over cooked, unless cooked involves the addition of cheese, cream, or some sort of heavy sauce. =) It’s partially a smell thing. I love tomatoes all the time, but was excited to hear that like a cup of tomato sauce has the goodness of what – like a dozen or more tomatoes? Let me know how your cooking experiment turns out! I do love a taste test! =)
