The Returning of Stuff

I met my now-best-friend when she began dating a friend of mine about three years ago. They were very on and off, and on again, but never with a shortage of drama.

910632_-sufferingThey broke up for what appears to be the final time in January, and since then, had not seen each other, or even spoken, except for the occasional IM. (The age of technology has created the lack of need for any sort of personal communication, ever.)

Last night, we were out getting our ritual pedicures when her phone started to ring. It was the ex.

Apparently, he had a biz meeting nearby, and thought it may be a good time to meet up and return each other’s stuff.

With something like an hour’s notice, my best friend immediately went home to make herself beautiful – after all, nothing less is acceptable when about to meet up with an ex. We want them to we are doing fabulous without them…and maybe just maybe want us more than ever when we walk away.

My friend anticipated a catch-up drink, and chose a casual-but-well-planned outfit that played perfectly against her freshly lacquered nails. I made the plan to sit as backup in a local bar as she went to meet him.

She was back five minutes later.

Apparently, exchanging stuff was just that. He ran out of his meeting, picked up a shopping bag, and ran back in. He did mention he liked her hair, though.

Sadly, my friend, who is gorgeous and a way better catch than this dude, is now a bit re-bitten. Seeing him has reopened old wounds, and his farewell “we should hang sometime!” has now restarted what may be the phone-waiting game. I feel bad. And think he’s a little bit of a douche bag.

Lesson? There’s a reason communication has become obsolete!
