The Ultimate Car Park

A week ago today was World Carfree Day, a celebration of alternatives to a life ruled by fossil-fueled transport. In Vancouver, Canada, a group of designers and artists known as the Vancouver Design Nerds rolled out a project they’re calling the Car Park, a 1973 Pontiac LeMans that’s been transformed into a vegetable garden with wheels.
The Design Nerds gutted the LeMans, utilizing the roof, trunk lid and hood as beds, lined it all in chicken wire and landscape cloth, filled it full of soil and planted a bevy of kale, chard, blueberry bush, strawberries, and an array other ornamentals and edibles.
From the article at Treehugger, here’s what’s happened to the Car Park since…
After the adventures of Car Free Day, we towed the Car Park to a friend’s driveway where it continues to attract attention from neighbours and news media. Its permanent home will be a street parking spot in front of the Society Promoting Environmental Conservation, just as soon as the City figures out how to classify the Car Park, to give it the appropriate parking permit.
The Design Nerds web site will be back online shortly and once it is, you’ll be able to catch more details of the project.
Honey! I’m going to go out and water the car, ok?
