The words of our fathers; quotes of note

Some of the most formative ideals which have shaped me as a person have come from fatherly advice. My dad has a great way of encapsulating concepts in a few easily-digestible and practical words. One particularly aphoristic quote from my father that has always stuck with me is:

What’s right is right, even when nobody is watching.

A few personal favorite quotes of note from famous people’s fathers:

My father used to say, ‘Let them see you and not the suit. That should be secondary.’

- Cary Grant

I’ve always followed my father’s advice: he told me, first to always keep my word and, second, to never insult anybody unintentionally. If I insult you, you can be goddamn sure I intend to. And, third, he told me not to go around looking for trouble.

- John Wayne

My grandfather once told me that there were two kinds of people: those who do the work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group; there was much less competition.

- Indira Gandhi

If you’ve got a quote from your father or grandfather that you’d like to share, I’d love hear it. Let me know if you’d like me to publish it here.
