Theme day- School is out: 5 easy and ready to go diabetic snacks

School is out and that means higher volume at home, more kids running around the house, pool water everywhere and snacks galore! This month’s theme day is Schools Out and today is the day it happens here at the Health and Wellness Channel.

I have a few healthy diabetic snack tips for keeping straight this summer. Instead of grabbing a cookie from the cookie jar or munching on a bag of Doritos why not have healthy and sugar free snacks waiting in the wings…

5 Ready to go diabetic friendly snacks:

1. Pre-cut celery and carrots and place them in a big Ziploc bag- you can open the fridge and grab a handful. They are crunchy and will fill your belly.

2. Popcorn- whether you throw it in the microwave or make it in an air popper… it will take less then 5 minutes and you can pop ahead of time and place in individual Ziplocs or have it in a big bowl on the table. You can eat 2 cups without guilt.

3. Sugar free Popsicles- need I say more. East as 1-2-3 and so darn good. Not to mention 30 calories and the kids will love this frozen treat as well.

4. Frozen sugar free Cool Whip. There is the regular flavor as well as the strawberry. Just pop a container in the freezer and then grab a 1/2 cup on a spoon or in a bowl. Sweet but not sugar-filled.

5. My personal favorite- I freeze the small containers of yogurt- the low sugar and carb control. I grab one out and use a spoon, it is just like ice cream and it is 3 grams of carbs and so yummy!! You can just pile them up in the fridge as well and eat them. If you freeze them you can take them on the go easier I have found.

What are your fave treats? Do you have any tips for when the schools are out and snacks are at an all-time high in your house? Share away…
