Things I never thought I’d hear my dad say: Part the 3,273rd

flower.gifWe cooked out yesterday for my daughter’s and my dad’s birthday, and, after we ate, my dad Said, “Hey, can we go to Michaels? I need to get some silk flowers.”

It’s especially funny, because, many moons ago, I lived out of town, near some outlet malls. My parents would often come to visit me over the long Labor Day weekend, and, we’d go shopping. Though he worked in retail most of my life, my dad isn’t exactly a big shopper.

My mother liked her some silk flowers, so, we’d often be in craft places picking them out, and, he’s be standing around. More often than not, it was his birthday, as it usually falls during the Labor Day Weekend.

Before my mother died, we’d ask him what he wanted to do for his birthday, and, we’d always offer the option of “go out to eat”, or, “go look at silk flowers” (OK, maybe you had to be there).

So, I’m pretty sure the earth shifted on it’s axis yesterday when he bought them of his own volition, yesterday.

If you’re wondering, he bought an antique pitcher that sits on a table in the front window of the house, and, it “needed something”.

You know, your mom passing is horrible because he lost a life partner. Yet….his life seems to be building afterwards?

Am I making sense? I may have hit the vodka and this could be a drive by commenting.

You mother may no longer be there, but her force continues to provide a guiding hand :)
