Thinspo Vids ~ An Analysis

I don’t think it’s any secret that “thinspiration” or “thinspo” vids are all over YouTube these days. I actually came across tons of them while posting videos for the “Sticks and Stones Project”.
What strikes me is the time and energy the thinspo videographers have obviously spent putting together their presentations. Some are truly intriguing, not for their content (which borders on the macabre in many cases), but for their attention to detail. The songs, the images, the rhythms, the colors… fascinating.
It’s almost… art. I suppose to many viewers, that’s what it appears.
Of course, art is subjective. I wonder if art can be dangerous, too? Indeed, these thinspiration videos definitely have the ability to add fuel to potentially deadly embers.
As I watch these vids, a simple question keeps coming into my mind: What if all the guys and gals with EDs spent the gobs of time they now devote to their conditions doing something for the world… and, by proxy, themselves?
Think about it…
What if the men and women suffering from bulimia volunteered to work with kids rather than bingeing and purging? What if anorexics lobbied on behalf of organizations instead of counting calories?
It’s my hope that some do. And that’s really inspirational.
