Tidy Tuesday – Clean Out the Freezer

Time to clean out the freezer to make room for all that summer fruit I want to freeze! Cleaning out a freezer frees up space and helps it run more efficiently, since you can stack items neatly to fill the space. (An empty freezer has to work harder to stay cool than a full one, but you don’t want to cram something in every inch of spare space, either.)

How to clean it out? Check to see if items have been in the freezer too long by using this handy guide. I try to remember to use a permanent marker to label everything before it goes in with that day’s date to make it easy. (I also use a sealer to remove extra air.)

Didn’t label your items? If you can’t remember what some unidentifiable chunk of dehydrated ice covered stuff is and can’t identify it by sight, you’ll want to toss it. If it has that distinctive freezer burned smell, you’ll want to toss it.

Once you’ve removed all the old food, neatly stack items back into the freezer in specific areas. For example, the top left corner of my freezer contains all the veggies. This helps you save time and energy when you are looking for that package of corn you know you bought the other week.

Do you have any tips for keeping a tidy freezer?
