Tip of the Day #34

We’ve had a touch of winter here in Georgia this morning and it is very windy and cold. Trying to get my kids to wear warm clothes this morning was no small feat. They still want to live in flip flops and shorts.
I tried some pants on my 3 year old this morning and none of them fit. He obviously had a major growth spurt. So, what do I do with the clothes that he’s outgrown? Well that’s my tip of the day.
Keep a box under the kids’ beds or in the closet for outgrown toys and clothes. Anytime you try something on them and it doesn’t fit, throw it in the box. When the box is full, donate it or put the clothes up on ebay.
By constantly weeding out the clothes that don’t fit your kids anymore, you will be able to know what items of clothing they need.

I do this. I have a garbage bag by the door. I don’t usually do the donation. I will save them up for a friend’s garage sale or I will save them for when I hear of someone whose house might have burned down or a foster kid or someone in need and give them then.
Another thing we do is place our favorites in a “keeper” box which we will give to our kids when they become adults. My was given the coolest bright orange Patagonia vest when he was 3. We know he will get a kick out of that when he has children (fate willing). We also keep a paper bag for things that will fit our younger niece and nephews.
Tracee:I love getting hand-me-downs from friends. I do have one friend I do this with. She gets my girl’s clothes. I’ve also been saving my 8 year olds clothes for his little brother.
I like the idea of saving the clothes for those in need after a house fire or a foster family. I’d much prefer to do that. I would love to know who the clothes are helping. Thanks for the tip!
Jon: I love that tip! My daughter is starting to browse through my closet. Very weird. I’ve already been able to give her several of my shirts. I may have to put a lock on my closet door.
