To Declaw or Not?

Probably one of the biggest hot-button topics among cat owners is the issue of declawing.

Personally, we didn’t do it. We have one cat (Sage) that we did consider it for a little bit but found an alternative (Soft Paws) that works very well for us. We’ve used them for several years and have never had any problems – the biggest concern is just keeping an eye out for caps that have come off so they can be replaced.

Over the years I’ve read a lot more cons about the procedure, heal time, and overall experience to be turned off by it (it’s even outlawed in many countries), than pros.

What are your thoughts on declawing?

We had our cat declawed when we first got him years ago… I wish I would have taken time to research it first. It was horrible for him, and us. I have always felt so bad about doing that to him.
SoftPaws are great, we used them on a rescue we’d taken in until we found her a new home.
I don’t think I could do another declaw. I mean I understand why it’s chosen in some cases, just my personal feelings.

Kari, I totally agree. I would never condemn someone for it – I think everyone makes the right choices for them and I don’t think this is an easy one.

I’ve had friends tease me over the years asking if I get paid by Soft Paws for hyping them up – they just work really well for us and I think they’re a great alternative! :D
