My husband and I have worked with youth for years and my husband has told them of his past. When he told them about it, it wasn't told in a prideful way of "look what I did". It was done in a way of, "I've been there. I've done that. I know where you're coming from. Sin hurts our lives. Sin has consequences." They seemed to appreciate his honesty.

The Rev and I started out doing youth group and I was always honest with the kids there. Luckily I haven't made too many decisions that I regret. My daughter is starting high school I have already started talking about dating and some of the mistakes that girls make and the ones that I myself made. Right now it just embarrasses her to think of dating but I hope that it in the long run she will see that Im being honest and she can come to me if she needs to when she herself has a boyfriend and needs to ask for advice.

being that we have done youth ministry for years, i find that it is better to tell the truth about your past so they know you know what you are talking about. otherwise, there is no real basis for them to believe you other than "because i said so".

Of course I will tell my son what I did in the past, but only if he asks. I don't believe in lying, especially not to my son. Also maybe he won't do some things just out of curiosity, especially if he knows it's not all fun and I regret it. At the very least I hope my honesty will make him feel like he can be honest with me and then at least I'll what he's up to and how I can help him.
