Today is Flag Day

When I was in school, many years ago, much was made of June 14, Flag Day in the United States.  At home, my mom always hung a large flag we owned.  Teachers had us sing patriotic songs, perform skits, research the development of the flag, and draw or color pictures of our American flag (depending on the age of the student).

Possibly many Alzheimer’s patients remember (if they’re at the lucid memory stage) celebrating Flag Day.  This can tie in with activities and discussions involving the flag.

Decorate the dining table or food trays with small flags.  Place an arrangement of flags on the table.  Hang the flag outside your home or the nursing home.  If they’re at the coloring stage, find pictures of flags they can try to color.  (Yes, my mother, at one stage, enjoyed coloring pictures.)  These may trigger memories in many.

Learn about Flag Day yourself as you care for the AD patient.
