Today is National Teacher Day

Think back to when you were in school, is there a teacher who inspired you, challenged you, or changed your life for the better? I’m sure there is.

How about your child’s teachers? I know my kids have been fortunate to have some wonderful teachers over the years and this week we will take some time to let them know how we really feel.

Today is the National Education Association’s (NEA) National Teacher Day.  Hopefully teachers from around the country will get treated to lunch, get notes from their students, and recognition from the community for the wonderful job they do!

How does your community recognize the teachers? Our school’s PTA dedicates the whole week to the teachers with a different theme each day.  On Thursday there will be a luncheon and on Friday we will send in little treats for the teachers. Here are a few ideas for inexpensive teacher appreciation gifts:

  • Fill a basket with stickers, stamps and other rewards for good classroom behavior.
  • Send in additional school supplies for the class. Teachers spend a lot of their own money to get classroom materials throughout the year.
  • A $5 or $10 gift certificate to a favorite coffee shop or lunch spot.
  • Create a small gift basket of tea bags, chocolate, and other tasty treats.
  • A small potted flower/plant always brightens the day.

If you are a teacher, I’d love to hear about some of your favorite gifts from students – especially as the end of the school year is upon us and we will definitely be revisiting this topic.  Not a teacher? Share your ideas too – the more the merrier.

My oldest daughter’s school sent home a list of things to bring teachers each day. Yesterday was a flower, and today was to write them a poem.

Steve – sounds a lot like what my kids are doing this week. Monday was bring a piece of fruit, today was write a note. This is easy when they are in elementary school and just have one teacher for the day – it gets crazy as they get older and have multiple teachers a day.
