Top 5 Illnesses that Cause Kids to Miss School

pinkeye conjunctivitisSchools are such a breeding ground for germs, it really amazes me that our kids don’t miss more days of school than they do. Afterall, I know that no matter how much we remind them, kids don’t always cover their mouths when they cough, they don’t always wash their hands, and they touch everything.

Since I have one home today with the lovely pinkeye virus, I thought I would share with you the top 5 illnesses that cause kids to miss school according to the Mayo Clinic:

  1. The Common Cold
  2. The Stomach Flu
  3. Ear Infection
  4. Pink Eye
  5. Sore Throat

Unfortunately we can’t prevent our kids from getting sick, but the good news is that as they get older, their immune systems get stronger. As parents we can help them even more by encouraging good hygiene practices, serving healthy meals, and making sure our kids get adequate sleep and exercise.

Oh! I hate pink eye! AJ had bronchitis for the first time this year. But, apparently he had that numerous times in the orphanage.

What I want to know is the amount of antibiotics that are over prescribed each year, as AJ had that problem from his orphanage stay…

My daughter’s 6th grade science teacher recently did an expirement where he put some kind of powder on the kids’ hands and then told them not to touch anything. By the end of class, the powder was all over the place. It was a good way to teach them how easily germs can spread.

Pickel – Bronchitis doesn’t sound fun. Luckily we have a doctor who is really good about not prescribing anti-biotics for everything.

    Kelly – that’s a pretty cool experiment!

  4. Kate says:

In our house it’s mostly “IwannawatchmoreTVitis.” Strangely enough, it is also spread at school and you can’t do anything to prevent your child from catching it.

  5. Michael Cruz says:

being a teacher, i noted the science teachers experiment with the powder. Unfortunately, every year I wonder what strain of the flu I’ll get from the kids!

  6. Calvin Warr says:

I wish I had this list when I was in school… then I would not need to crack my head each time I tried to skip school… hmmm… oops! Wrong discussion!
