Labor Day is such an interesting holiday. There is so much historical background to the holiday because of all of the clashes between big business and workers and the differing political viewpoints. It also is a great time for teachers to talk with kids about the different jobs that people do. With all that is going on, I was pretty sure I could find a few great Labor Day books to share with you. I was right. Here is my list of top Labor Day books:

- Men at Work by Lewis Hine – Really neat old photos of men welding, operating machines, etc.
- The Labor Day Murder by Lee Harris – A cozy mystery by one of my favorite authors. (This is part of a series where every holiday involves a shocking murder for the heroine to stumble across and then solve. It would totally put me off holidays!)
- First Day in Grapes by L. King Perez – This one is a child friendly look at the migrant workers who harvest grapes.
- The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck – If you somehow missed reading it in high school, here’s a much grittier portrayal of the migrant worker’s life for grown ups.
- Jobs People Do by D.K. Publishing – A cheery look at different types of workers that is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers to look at.
